AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman’s purse is more than just an accessory. It can be a life-saving tool for survivors of domestic violence.

On Wednesday, the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the Texas Advocacy Project for “Handbags for Hope,” to make their annual call for donated purses.

Once the purses are collected, organizers make sure each handbag has a hotline number inside. The number, 1-800-374-HOPE, is discretely stitched into the bag’s lining to help victims of domestic violence. It’s designed for women to have easy access to the hotline. The bags will be delivered to shelters across Texas.

The donation drive goes from Feb. 22 to March 31. Handbags can be dropped off at the Travis County Sheriff’s Office at 5555 Airport Blvd, Austin.
